Topic: Return of the goldtop!!

Not a great pic, but looks like he played it in Austin.

Re: Return of the goldtop!!

very cool

Re: Return of the goldtop!!

one of the few things I remember about the gig—it sucks I was actually fantasizing about being sober and getting a coffee at the Starbucks on sixth and Congress before hitting the show- so I could relish in it and remember every small detail, but of course Austin takes over as always (part of the reason I got bored living there) - couldn't tell you what songs were played on it ----maybe old Jerry?

from what I read, he dedicated Old Jerry to Jerry Jones, and they played Lions (Linden) and Stereo for the encore.

Re: Return of the goldtop!!

the boy your mother wanted you to meet

Re: Return of the goldtop!!

Love that guitar, glad to see it's still alive. Wonder if it needed some repairs or if he just sorta was into playing other ones for a while.

It has been a long while since we've seen the Jazzmaster, too, hasn't it?

Re: Return of the goldtop!!

Im sorry, but that back drop was kinda retarded - I blacked that out of my head for a reason - I could see the band simply not caring and probably just letting it ride - still though, someone should have just projected the gate fold of TT or something (that's what I would have done if I was working there) . . . Six street venues, venues in Austin in general totally just suck/ are lame for the most part - live music capital, YEAH RIGHT

Anyways must say this performance of Baby C'mon is my all time favorite!!!! Godddam!!! The band and the SG sounded REAL GOOD! Stephen was emoting in a such way, which was really so surprising - was not holding back, not just going through the motions. Not to sound corny, put this is like real expression - fucking classic Jicks moment WOW! You can hear me over yelling again on this one. When the song ends you can hear some girl laughing hysterically. Can it get any better? UHHHHHHHH

That sounds right, I honestly have a hard time remembering now, it has definitely been a long time. I think MT was, at least on the tour, the Strat and Goldtop, then the Goldtop went away and the Guild SG copy came out for WOAJB tour.

I don't remember seeing the Goldtop on the MT tour; it would've had to have been early on, because I know he was already using the Guild S-100 for the majority of that tour. Last time I remember seeing the goldtop was 2009 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Y2zOx4LuEc). But even then, I don't think it was in heavy rotation.

The JM was used heavily on the Pave our in 2010, then it came back briefly in 2012 (http://www.portlandcustomshop.com/shop/ … our-omaha/) but he's been stickin' to that strat.

Honestly, I think the strat is his best sounding guitar.

Of course, you are 100% right. I guess I suffered a memory pull, or something.

I'd have a hard time picking his best sounding guitar. The Strat looks rough as all hell but definitely sounds great. The Goldtop has a classic, classic tone. And especially on WOAJB he really made that Guild SG copy pull out some stellar tones... with the humbuckers, it was a little more naturally fuzzy than what we're used to from SM.

The crazy thing is that I just basically implied that the Jazzmaster is the worst sounding of his four most commonly used guitars. Which is silly because it sounds great.

That's the thing! He's played such a variety of guitars and amps and pedals over the years and he always sounds like him. Amp loud as hell, all dynamics thru the fingers.

I just tend to prefer single coils in general, so I've always liked his fenders, but you're right, the Les Paul does sound great in his hands. You could probably get pretty close to those P-90s here: https://reverb.com/item/1170880-gibson- … 1978-cream

I would love to see his jazzmaster come back to life. If it still hasn't been done, it badly needs a freshly cut nut and fret level/crown (or a re-fret, depending). And getting a Staytrem bridge and simultaneously removing the buzz-stop would be icing on the cake.

Re: Return of the goldtop!!

Man, ya'll know a lot of minutia — I so can't keep up. I'm just a wash, some sound, a jiggle, better in the astral projection than the stats compilation. I feel like a loser, but one with a very good dream life (behind the curtain). Baby C'mon!

Re: Return of the goldtop!!

I saw the Jicks at a record store performance a year ago in NYC. I got there early and walked up close to see stephen's beat up old stratocaster. And man it was road weary. Ha. I imagined all the tours and shows he played it during the pavement years. All that history in those instruments is amazing. Great post !

You know, you're probably onto something as to why we've seen all his guitars take time on the shelf the past few years. They are all ~40 year old guitars that have been subject to heavy (probably near) daily use, plus the stress and strain of touring. I bet the Goldtop and JM have both gone away for re-frets. They were probably pretty gnarly.

what do you mean by Austin takes over?

I'm thinking of moving there..in the near future. I was thinking I can learn to play bass and maybe I can get into a band.

partying my face off basically in Austin man

Once when I was living in Austin , I saw Gerard Cosoly at Beerland (actually I knew a head of time he was going to be there because he's friends with one of my close friends, Veronica)— anyways I preemptively made a decision to wear my Love Reigns in Shirt and when I saw him standing at the door I kept conspicuously and drunkenlywalking past him as if Im a moving t-shirt billboard— just advertising my Love basically.  I guess it doesn't get no better (or worse) than that.

I got Austin Indy (Indy-SENdy) stories for days man . . . maybe I'll share some more later,

But right now I got to walk to the store and get a pepsi

Re: Return of the goldtop!!

Seneca, you're a trip. Gotta get that Pepsi.
