Since you brought it up, let's talk about it briefly. I'm not the biggest arcade fire fan or aficionado, but I like some songs off of the suburbs. They've never been my "jam" per se. But I checked out the everything now record, & it's hard for me to listen to. Something about it seems so ingenuine and vapid. It's uninviting to listen to. The lyrics just feel out of place, clumsy, and lazy, and the way Butler rap-sings them... the whole thing makes me feel uneasy while I'm listening, which is something that's hard to find in a record.

That's how I feel about Arcade Fire all the time. There's usually a song or two that are strong, then the rest seems not genuine, and uninviting to me.   Often I find myself feeling sorry for Butler in a strange way that I am not accustomed to when listening to music.

Really? I don't know if I've come around to Ersatz but this one seemed pretty excellent right off the bat. Yes, there is a lot of molten hard rocking that is less synonymous with The Fall than many other styles, but there are a lot of really cool weird things happening in the album too. Love the transition from the anti music intro of MES into Fol De Rol and Couples vs Jobless Mid 30s is a sonic haunted house. Backwards bit on Victoria Train Station Masacre is enjoyable as well. My favorite from this line up will likely always be Imperial Wax Solvent but this seems a worthwhile entry in the catalog.

Re: 2017 albums - an ongoing thread/review

Jumping from recent listens to here, Swede, what are your thought on the LCD Soundsystem album? It's on my to-buy list, but I'm suddenly finding myself wary of spending money on comeback records from former indie mainstays. I resisted the urge to splurge on the new Broken Social Scene record and what I've heard from it since has reinforced my misgivings.

I've only got three albums from this year: Spoon Hot Thoughts; Algiers Underside of Power; Perfume Genius No Shape. All Matador I've just realized. And they're all great to me. I've had to become so selective.

Re: 2017 albums - an ongoing thread/review

Hej, perfect depth, a bit on the fence on the new LCD Soundsystem. Had a listen to it on a car trip recently and this is what I remember thinking while it was playing:

nice kinda kraut-y song....Jeez is that Fripp!!? Gotta be...not as dance-y this album is it?...mom, can you please shut up?...he's singing is more regular/normal...miss his shouting and Mark E Smith impersonations...and general craziness...still, this might be a grower, I kinda getting into it now....looong song....ooops, I need gas....yay, some craziness!...not as good as the first album but in it's own right might be pretty good actually....

I guess, if you expect another album of what LCD  Soundsystem used to be you might be disappointed cause it's not BUT it might be as good as the old ones but in a different way....I have to get back on this after a few more listens.

Have you heard any of it, pd??

Re: 2017 albums - an ongoing thread/review

i'm pretty terrible about keeping up with new music these days.  it's a cliche, but it just gets to a point where it seems more like a chore than a hobby as i get older/busier.  and usually the stuff that gets super hyped recently i'm not feeling anyway, so i'd have to dig even deeper.  so, yeah, i mostly just find myself spinning older stuff i'm already familiar with

that being said, i would highly recommend a giant dog.  i haven't had a chance to dive into their newest one yet, but haven't been disappointed by them yet

I have been a little on the fence on this, too. My first listen to it was on a long run, since most LCD is just so GREAT for that!   Well, the new album does have its moments, but the music isn't reliably propulsive and driving all the way through.  (I think that may be what you mean by "dance-y"?).   It wasn't really the right setting for this album. I've been listening to it again and you're right, it IS a grower... I'm really liking it.

Re: 2017 albums - an ongoing thread/review

For those of you who still like rock...Rome Is Not A Town just released their first proper album and it's yummy for friends of Sonic Youth-like stuff. All 4 of dem girls are from Gbg and they used to teach girls (like my daughter) on what it's like to be in a band or just do music. 1 week every summer on a camp just doing that for 12-16 yr olds who wants to learn more about making music...arranging songs, writing lyrics, recording, amps, boxes, drums, present the music to others etc...The works. Love them for that AND their band is pretty freaking good. Thurston Moore wanted them as support when he came here to play a year or two ago (Coco did the cover for their first single)...Did I say they're really good?

Also, Melkbelly. Listen to their drummer. Best I've heard in years. And the album's is even better than they say...

Re: 2017 albums - an ongoing thread/review

My favorite records of the year (so far)

99. Valerie June: The order of time
Mystically enhanced country soul elegance.

98. Bob Dylan: Triplicate
He's getting better at it. Maybe next year he'll go fishing.

97. John Moreland: Big bad luv
What Springsteen should have sounded like.

96. John Murry: A short history of decay
Stylized heartbreak.

95. Bill Baird: Baby blue abyss
Part one of twin albums. Noisy fun yin.

94. Virginia Wing / XAM duo: Tomorrow's gift
https://virginiawingmusic.bandcamp.com/ … rrows-gift
Just a big sound, improv noise with catchy saxophone blasting through.

93. Chris Price: Stop talking
Revenge of the wet powerpop obsessives.

92. Glen Campbell: Adios
Uncool, but when was he ever? Heartfelt goodbye.

91. Bill Baird: Easy machines
Part two of twin albums. The more reflective yang.

Re: 2017 albums - an ongoing thread/review

90. Art Feynman: Blast off through the wicker
Trippy jams with falsetto.

89. Chuck Berry: Chuck
Good old Chuck.

88. Angelica Rockne: Queen of San Antonio
https://angelicarockne.bandcamp.com/
Cosmic Americana twang.

87. Gunn-Truscinski duo: Bay head

86. Chris Hillman: Bidin' my time
Nothing wrong with a brief reappearance from Chris Hillman.

85. Anjou: Epithymia
https://anjou.bandcamp.com/album/epithym-a
Former Labradford post-rockers create slowly unfolding soundscapes. Immersive.

84. Michael Nau: The load EP
https://michaelnau.bandcamp.com/album/the-load-ep
I'm thrilled with the return of the EP-format in 2017, see many examples ahead.

83. Ariel Pink: Dedicated to Bobby Jameson
Doing what he does. Some gems between sarcastic 'is this really necessary' tomfoolery.

82. Feelies: In between
Doing what they do. Crept in under the skin.

81. Michael Nau: Some twist
Fleshed out version of last year's lo-fi debut sound. Spectral balladry and good vibes.

Re: 2017 albums - an ongoing thread/review

80. Ron Gallo: Heavy meta
He's an earnest young man, with all the sense of humor of a Patti Smith, but it's got wild abandon.

79. Benjamin Booker: Witness
Righteous stuff. He's calmed down a bit, but all the better for it.

78. Motorpsycho: Begynnelser
Probably a specialist record. Incidental music for a Norse play.

77. Wild beasts: Punk drunk and trembling EP
Synth goodbye.

76. Willie Nelson: God's problem child
Still with us.

75. Andrew Combs: Canyons of my mind
Wide screen drama and myth.

74. John Maus: Screen memories
Homebuilt synths and droll lyrics about death. Perfect for the holiday season.

73. Unthanks: Diversions Vol 4: The songs and poems of Molly Drake
Recital of Nick Drake's mom's songs.

72. DAAU: DAAU spielt DAAU. Hineininterpretierung
Post-everything folk/world/gypsy/dub instrumentals. An adventure.

71. Hiss golden messenger: Hallelujah anyhow
Van Morrison circa 'Tupelo honey'.

Re: 2017 albums - an ongoing thread/review

70. A. Savage: Thawing dawn
Billed as some sort of singer-songwriter sideproject, but really fully in line with Parquet Courts' 2016 album.

69. Do make say think: Stubborn persistent illusions
Powerful surge. Fist pumping triumph.

68. King Gizzard and the lizard wizard: Polygondwanaland
Lysergic fantasy.

67. Anna St Louis: First songs
https://annastlouis.bandcamp.com/album/first-songs
Unfinished, compelling sketches.

Adding yet more short bursts of incongruous melody.

Meandering ruminations.

64. Phoenix: Ti amo
Dance as the world burns.

63. James Elkington: Wintress woma
Troubadour

62. Ryuichi Sakamoto: Async
When minimalists sigh.

61. Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams: Contraband love
From the ole songwell.

45. Mechanics: Are dancing in your head
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMxAp7oNj5E
They call it jazz, but it's improv no wave and avant rock. All of it conceived as a tribute to Ornette Coleman.
Out of lovetown - great lyrics: Oh Agnes, you sweet right wing mayor, why did you have to seduce me?

44. Kamasi Washington: Harmony of difference
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtW1S5EbHgU
Cosmic consciousness jazz.

43. Fred Thomas: Changer

This is how 30-somethings feel. Really.

42. Alex G: Rocket

41. Elko Blijweert/Joris Caluwaerts: Demon geography

Wonderfully screwed and loopy instrumentals and songs.
