Re: The Official New Album Thread

Ok - I'll bite.

Any teaser titles? Themes? Another song about Houston? Footage of Stephen dropping in on vert?

I haven't been able to catch any insta-G posts. : /

Re: The Official New Album Thread

sen, I don't think so. I assume this will be like most Jix releases... all of a sudden we'll get a website revamp and Matador will throw out some half-hearted press stuff.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking Matador, but compared to gusto with which they've promoted a lot of their hotter records the past decade, they seem to take the Jicks core fanbase a bit for granted and let these recs fly in under the radar. This is maybe just my perception, so take it with a grain of salt. Just feels like they really really pushed on records like David Comes to Life, or this new QOTSA album, the Car Seat stuff, Perfume Genius... which is cool! Just seems the Jicks are kind of "locked in" and we get what we get when we get it.

Well, if you ask me it's a CONSPIRACY - a C-O-N . . . . . . . SPIRACY

JK . . .

. . . honestly I have no idea to even really comment or have an opinion about how much Jicks is or isnt promoted by their label . . .
they are promoting the F out of that Kurt Ville / Courtney Barnett thing a lot on twitter tho. . . maybe they can do something slick with jicks (I mean slick in the best possible way) Last album, although not my fav, did seem to get the best reviews thus far. AMMMIRIGHT?

Re: The Official New Album Thread

btw
the last comment may be inaccurate - maybe Pig Lib had the best reviews ? I remember it got a best of the year from a critic in Artforum and I was pretty impressed by that >>>> Although a shout out in an art mag wont get you too terribly far these days . . . maybe you have to have that one Mackintosh plus proponent guy with the shaved head on youtube who was confused with being in the artl-right to review it or something to get some tracktion theses days

Re: The Official New Album Thread

Yeah I don't know, we're obviously absurd fanatics, but I think SM is maybe taken for granted a bit. At this point, I think the totality of the Jicks catalog is almost as good as the Pavement catalog, but you'd never know by reading whatever mags/web sites are purveyors of these things. Not that it matters necessarily. I don't care if there's a big promo push, but it sure would be nice to get some news about the upcoming record and any possible tour plans.

I seem to recall Pig Lib mostly being criticized for having  too much guitar noodling and lacking cohesion --when it was noticed at all. Admittedly just going by memory here. Either way, I'm sorry I missed that critic calling it album of the year--that would have made me smile.

Be careful, it will turn into 2 years and then 5 if you're not careful.

I realized the other day that I actually listen to a good deal more music that I dislike than otherwise, just by virtue of being around the radio when my kids are listening, etc. My commutes are pretty much NPR or sports radio. Something's gotta give, I need  a new music regimen or something.

Re: The Official New Album Thread

I mostly find myself discovering old/obscure music from the 60s and 70s thanks to reissue and illegal file sharing but I definitely still find great music (to my ears at least) being made every year. Having gotten REALLY into Sic Alps this year my favorite LP of the year is The Peacers' Introducing the Crimsmen. I'm probably crazy but to me the album sounds like White Album production on a hazy bunch of tunes assembled from all right places (starts with a Piper-era Floyd style tune, some fuzz, some skronk, an Elvis Costello type song, even a Basement Tapes type tune near the end). Super mellow but really great. Wand also released a pretty good one called Plum, The Mad Walls Somewhere Anywhere, and of course new ones from Oh Sees, Damaged Bug, The Fall and Deerhoof. Favorite finds not released this year, but new to me are: Annette Peacock - Revenge AKA I Belong to A World That's Destroying Itself, SOOOOO much Sun Ra, lots of 70s era Miles Davis, Onra Cinioseries (part 3 did come out this year), Khan Jamal Creative Arts Ensemble -Drum Dance to The Motherland, The BYG Deal compilation, Wimple Winch's song Rumble of Mersey Square South, and the Pretty Thing songs Eagle's Son, Alexander and Defecting Gray.

watch out for the gypsy children in electric dresses they're insane
i hear they live in crematoriums and smoke your remains
