I have to agree, I got around 60 pages in and couldn't take it.  I liked his Amnesia Moon, and have Gun, With Occasional Music on my shelf, though these titles are a bit different than what he was going with the new book.  I got's to wonder if it's like when DeLillo wrote "Underworld," delving back into his boyhood, critics gave him raves seemingly for just writing a more personal story, even though his other more abstract and absurd stuff was so much better.  THE BOOK CRITICS HAVE NO CLOTHES!

Re: what are we reading?

The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Good book for being published by MTV.

Re: what are we reading?

DenverG-
Yeah, I have less and less patience every day, I'm reading Zadie Smith's "White Teeth" now, and have been for awhile, but between that and other things to do and read in life, it's slow going.  I might get back to it, but I have so many unread books sitting around, it's hard to persuade myself to suffer through when the future looks bleak (though I'll take your recommendation, after all, there are people out there that really liked this book).

'Cloud Atlas' by David Mitchell is the best book written in a long time. Has anyone else read it?

Re: what are we reading?

i dig TGSH, but i don't think it's up there with thompson's best work.  i like hells angels and f&l in LV better.

right now i have too much to read for school to do any "pleasure reading" but over the summer i read (among other things) plath's "the bell jar" and it was good if you feel like being depressed to all hell.

the boy your mother wanted you to meet

Re: what are we reading?

yeah , i agree with you on that one bob ,
the first hunter book i read was hells angels then right after that it was the proud highway wich was perfect cuz it explains very well how he wrote HA + you gotta love those drunken letters

Re: what are we reading?

in the last month I have read...

Middlesex by Stephen Eugenides. Its the story of a hermaphrodite and his greek imigrant family history. Doesn't sound great, but it really is. Won the pulitzer a few years back.

Perfect sound forever, which was a good read.

The Da Vinci Code which was enteratining but kinda annoying at the same time.

Re: what are we reading?

Besides scatological comics, Chandie really has no interest in literature. The only novels he's ever really enjoyed are "Crime and Punishment" and "The Sound and the Fury".

Re: what are we reading?

Jan/Feb (so far) I:

finished the newish Don Quixote translation (only took 6 months)

Read:
When Pride Still Mattered - A Vin Lombardi bio.

Under & Alone (Queen) - a book about a ATF guy who infiltrated the Mongol motorcycle gang

The Long Walk - A story of a Polish POW who claimed to have walked from  Siberia to India to escape the GULAG. I'm unsure whether to believe it all or not. Good story either way.

Ballad of the Whiskey Robber - Armed robbery & hockey in post-communist Hungary. Fan-flippin'-tastic read.

Aborted R. Clarke's Scorpion's Gate due to poor dialogue about 20 pages in.

Am now starting Walk on the Wild side by Nelson Algren.

yay for books.

no one can tell you you've got to be afraid
