Re: Watcha Watchin'?

Man Realness, just seeing Clockwork for the first time. What did you think?

'The Straight Story' I've heard that title, but refresh my memory...

And circa, all that Shakespeare sounds rad. I love the Ethan Hawke Hamlet, as well as the Romeo & Juliet w/ Clare Danes. There should be more Shakespeare set in future societies...timeless.

"This is a story about old age and it´s a story about a man`s life. Richard Farnsworth is one of the most special people I ve ever met. So much comes through from way deep inside. I`ve never seen anything like it... And it`s a beautiful thing to see his face. His face says so much ...and in the script you will learn about a regular man`s life. And, you know, what he`s gone through is similar to a lot of people." David Lynch

Yeh The Straight Story ist very rad. I love those starry skies too mak. i also love the sweeping shots of the cornfields coupled with Angelo Badalamenti's wonderful soundtrack. It's a film that when i watch it, makes me wish i was an american corn farmer. I watch it quite often. I think it would be good for the kate h junior all star league.

also kate h i know, i cant believe its taken me this long to see A Clockwork Orange!! i thought it was fantastical. i loved the language used in it. i think it was a very big influence on my favourite comedian/media terrorist chris morris. if you ever get the jickbird soundcircle thats going round you will get my bonus cd of his radio series Blue Jam. he uses nonsense words that you actually understand, just like in ACO. i loved the old ludwig van, it fitted perfectly. even though alex murdered people and raped people i couldnt help thinking he was very cool and feeling sorry for him when he had his eyes pinned open and was brainwashed. i liked the scene in the record shop. i wish i could go shopping in there.

Re: Watcha Watchin'?

Gentlemen:

I'm SOLD! on The Straight Story, danke. Will put it on the list.

Clockwork Orange--have you read the book?

On to language--I majored in dance but before that, I was majoring in acting for two years. One of my teachers, Mr. Hopper, taught acting 101 for two semesters in that whole experiential/experimental theater lab way---I don't think we read but one straight scene all year. It was all "exercizes."

Anyhoo, we easily spent several weeks in the realm of apparent jibberish, his contention being, like the above cited comedian, that the essence of emotion and meaning comes through tonality and intent. He got the Voice class teacher in on it, and together we were bombarded on both fronts with deconstructing (if that term can fit here..hee hee) language in its expected sense and discovering its underlying power, I guess you could call it. It was a very fun way to upend seeming limits and unveil prior expectations.

Cool. I would add context to that list, too.

I wrote a paper in grad school for my linguistics class about Dr. Seuss's use of nonsense words and how they are identifiable as such even to kiddies just getting a grasp on the language. Spent most of the text of the paper discussing how the nonsense words connote meaning in an ostensibly meaningless form. I still find the subject really interesting.

Re: Watcha Watchin'?

"St. Story" ist rad--Sad, I think Farnsworth's last role before he hemingwayed/huntered himself.  Makes the story all the more melancholy.  I really liked him in "anne of green gables" too (don't forget the "e").  Markus, pickup the "St. Story" soundtrack if you don't be havin' it already.

I managed to watch all three hours of "Patton" not once, but twice over the weekend (my better half was thrilled).  Thank you, AMC!  Also played about 14 hours of Halo II on the Xbox.  Thank you, Bill Gates.

Re: Watcha Watchin'?

2 or 3 Things I Know About Her.  It kind of soured me again on Godard.  His movies are definitely highly-stylized (the cup of coffee swirling around was awesome), but this one was bent too much on philosophical preaching that kind of distracted me from everything else.  In a way like the movie I Heart Huckabees.  I appreciate that these movies are reaching for some philosophical enquiry, but they either reached too high or didn't have a good enough story behind it to make for a more satisfying experience.

Also saw Playtime which was funky.
Goodfellas-rewatching this.  It is near perfect.

Re: Watcha Watchin'?

Ungent, did you ever see a film about three people, two men and a woman, who are taking a walk around a castle in France and having some conversation about philosophy? I can't for the life of me recall the title, but with all these preachy/philosophy/stream of thought idea movies, I am vaguely remembering this film. Must have been out around 85-92, methinks.

Anyone?

Thanks! I stand corrected and I have a terrible memory, so forgive me on that one. I recall it was a rant, and I thought I remembered it being on limited government/not trusting the government, not trusting social ordering, getting Uncle Sam off our backs, which is why I was calling it right-wing, (and thinking kinda old school conservative when I said right-wing) even though I guess i should know by now to carefully use the term-right wing in contemporary politics since meanings are so contraverted today. Though why I called it pathetic I don't know--maybe because he ended up exhausting himself with the force of his steam--but I don't think it is pathetic beyond that.

At any rate, hey, the whole script is online: http://www.american-buddha.com/waking.life.screen.htm

And here's Alex Jones's bit:

(Guy with a bullhorn is driving through the city streets yelling)

You can't fight city hall. Death and taxes. Don't talk about politics or religion. This is all the equivalent of enemy propaganda rolling across the picket line. Lay down GI, lay down GI. We saw it all through the 20th century. And now in the 21st century, it's time to stand up and realize that we should not allow ourselves to be crammed into this rat maze. We should not submit to dehumanization. I don't know about you, but I'm concerned about what's happening in this world. I'm concerned with the structure. I'm concerned with the systems of control, those that control my life and those that seek to control it even more. I want freedom. That's what I want. And that's what you should want. It's up to each and every one of us to turn loose and show them the greed, the hatred, the envy, and yes, the insecurities, because that's the central mode of control. Make us feel pathetic, small, so we'll willingly give up our sovereignty, our liberty, our destiny. We have got to realize that we're being conditioned on a mass scale. Start challenging this corporate slave state. The 21st century is going to be a new century. Not the century of slavery, not the century of lies and issues of no significance, of classism, of sadism, and all the rest of the modes of control. It's going to be the age of human kind standing up for something pure and something right. What a bunch of garbage: liberal, democrats, conservative, republican, it's all there to control us, it's two sides of the same coin. Two management teams bidding for control, the CEO job of Slavery, Incorporated! The truth is out there in front of you, but they lay out this buffet of lies. I'm sick of it! And I'm not going to take a bite of it. Do you got me? Our existence is not futile. We're going to win this thing. Humankind is too, good. We're not a bunch of underachievers. We're going to stand up, and we're going to be human beings. We're going to get fired up about the real things, the things that matter, creativity and the dynamic human spirit that refuses to submit. Well that's it. That's all I got to say.

I didn't, actually, but I can see the relationship. Interesting. I should put it in my Netflix queue?

Aside: my cousin had very poor speech clarity as a child (something about having, and I quote my Aunt, "a weak tongue") and she became so frustrated w. others not being able to understand her articulation that she simply started making words up & teaching her family members what their assigned meanings were. Took 6 years of speech therapy to sort of all that out.

Well, if you're going to see Nell, you shouldn't see the German version, apparently! Trying to recall if there are other movies where language/sounds unusual speech play a part....

As to kids, there are different theories on speech therapy. IN some case a physical lack can be to blame--but what about when it is made up words? Can be interesting...

I hope whoever posted that Dead Man would be okay for my kids is right--they want to watch, and that's what we're going to do right now. We've got lots of snow, and they wont have school tomorrow.

Well, what happened was once I saw the alleyway blowjob I said, "Actually, kids, this movie isn't appropriate for you just yet," and that was that and they went to bed. I don't think they picked up on what was going on, so, no biggie. But the violence and shooting, they wouldn't have wanted to see that either. My kids haven't grown up around pervasive access to tv or video games, so they're not into/or jaded about murders on TV. And they're little still, so, there's time. I'd certainly approve of them wathing it when they've grown.

But don't feel bad. I took them to see 'Love Actually' in the theater because I thought it was rated PG. And ten minutes in when two porn star stand ins are faking fellatio I was like, "This is PG???" So all through that film I had to keep having the kids cover their eyes.

Everybody hates Leo. His heyday was 'Gilbert Grape" and "This Boy's Life," but I was forever colored by his comments against Daniel Day Lewis when filming "Gangs of New York" in which Day Lewis was brilliant, and DiCaprio a lifeless, talentless sop. DiCaprio derided Day Lewis's method acting, where DL was constantly playing "The Butcher" on and off the set. DiCaprio called it stupid--yet look who turned in a stellar performance and who sucked.

Did anybody even see 'The Aviator?' If not its the fault of casting Leo as the lead. No disrespect to Scorscese, but...

Polanski is great. Now take a stab at Repulsion! And of course The Pianist is amazing!

Re: Watcha Watchin'?

the last few movies I have seen:

A Fist Full of Dollars
Suicide Club. oh my god! oh my god!
a Great Day in Havana. It's a documentary about young Cuban artists and it's just not that great.
I just watched 400 Blows again last week. It's one of my favourite movies of all time (even though I haven't watched the other three? movies that are companions). I guess Stolen Kisses is next.

I'm going to watch The Big Sleep tonight and then I'm going to take a big sleep (hopefully not the Big Sleep, though).

We've got perfect form when we fall.

No, Kate, I don't think I've seen (or heard) of that movie.  Sounds kind of interesting.  I think Smoke is a good example of a philosophical movie that works.  The script was written by Paul Auster though so I guess that helps.
