Re: William Reid/Lazycame

When The Jesus & Mary Chain died in 1998, some part of rock ‘n’ roll went with them.  The chaos and noise they brought into their music in the early 80s was some of the greatest “alternative” music ever made.  Now that they’re gone, the brothers Reid still feel they should be making music.  William, the more talented of the two, went solo as Lazycame, and Jim, brought former JAMC bassist Ben Lurie with him, as well as Nick Sanderson (Earl Brutus) and Romi Mori (The Gun Club).  The end result isn’t far off the worst moments of JAMC’s 15 year career.  Finbegin is William fooling around with his guitar and microphones, breaking up his songs to create jagged pieces of music.  Relying on the feedback he once loved, songs like “Rokit”, which is drowned out under thick techno beats (seriously) and “Naturallow”, which is the sound of him killing his guitar (I think), attempt to cover up any serious attempt he had at making real music.  “Mcintoshlost” is the only song here that’s even remotely serious, for everything else sees William trying to make a complete and utter racket from experimenting with noise and non-JAMC styles of music.  Freeheat on the other hand, is the one to go to if you’re suffering from Mary Chain withdrawal.  Making the smart move and sticking with the rock ‘n roll, Don’t Worry, Be Happy lands somewhere between Honey’s Dead and Munki.  Plenty of melodies, fuzz, and vulgar language, the songs are b-sides at best, which is maybe why this is only an EP and not an album.  “The Two Of Us” is a good attempt at capturing the glory of a song like “Far Gone and Out”.  However, “Facing Up To The Facts” is ruined by mindless lyrics and boring repetition.  The two remaining tracks are pointless drivel that are a waste coming from this band’s obvious ability to write good tunes (like they each did in the past).  It was a shame when JAMC finally ended their career.  Yes, it was just after they delivered their worst album, and yes, it should have happened, but the music on these two releases should not have.  Let’s forget about Lazycame and Freeheat and hope this is where it ends, so we can go back and appreciate them for what they were.
