Thanks for all of this, folks, you are good people.
I actually wasn't going to respond, but I do feel a bit like I need to at least comment.
Firstly, Muzak, I am truly sorry if I come across as anti-American. I am not, I properly love America, and still have an almost child-like fascination with the place. I do however, love prodding the Americans on here with a stick to try and get a reaction, and to be honest, I kind of thought it was an enjoyable reciprocal arrangement where we all took the piss out of each other’s idiosyncrasies. Mock my teeth, my boiled food and our stupid accents - I love it, and thought we could all do that to each other. If this has ever come across as anything stronger than that I really apologise, and I will make a point of altering my tone.
Little Bird is actually raising issues that have come up on more than one occasion in the past so I am struggling to completely dismiss them as just one guy (albeit, it could be the same one guy as before I guess). I see this board as a fantastic meeting point of friends both cyber, and in real life, who share an interest in indie rock, and basically just kind of like each other. I don’t see it as a Justin Bieber style OMG I LOVE MALKMUS board, I see it as a place for people into Malkmus to discuss him and everything else, as we tend to be of a type, and that type tends to get along. But as I say, this isn’t the first time someone has got their nose out of joint for negative comments made by me, about SM records, and I find it really frustrating. Can’t we discuss? Can’t we debate? Quite frankly, if someone loves everything, it is pretty hard to value their opinion.
I do also find strange the opinion that I have weird taste in music – although I love our discussions on that sort of thing. Is it really hard to imagine some liking everything from indie-guitar singer-songwriter Stephen Malkmus to indie-country-guitar singer songwriter Ryan Adams/Bright Eyes? Or power-indie-guitar band Pavement to power-indie-guitar band Jimmy Eat World (I know I am stretching it here, but you must see my point). It’s not like I am saying the only music I like is Russian spoken word, Amerie and Atari Teenage Riot!
Bright Eyes I will defend, but I have to say in all my years as a music fan I have never come across the opinion that he is some teen-act. In the UK he is held up as a classic songwriter, and critically lauded, pulling a pretty cool, tasteful crowd. This must be an American view, and I would once again say (as I do about JEW), that I pick the bands I like because I like them, not because of some association that has been presented to me (or made up by me).
Finally the “gloating” thing. I completely accept I post more stuff about what I am up to than others, but I am trying to start new conversations, something that is always needed on here. I am in a band, I am promoting that monthly club night, I do go on holiday a lot and I do go to a lot of gigs. If talking about that stuff is seen as gloating, then fine I will stop it, but it does seem a bit strange, that on a forum, you can’t talk about that stuff and use it as conversation starters. Would be a pretty anodyne place if we could only discuss just how great Malkmus is.
Sorry for the lengthy post, but hope that clears my name slightly.
