Sounds great Miranda, glad you enjoyed it. I was tempted to go when I heard about it but promptly forgot.

Enjoy KJ zeng.

This thread has been quiet lately. Myself I can't remember the last gig I went to and nothing booked at the moment. Might see Amon Tobin with a friend next month. Not that familar with him but he puts on a rad show apparently.

Thanks, GwtR.  KJ's a durable prodigy.  I anticipate being delighted, entranced and amazed.

Hope you do go to see Amon Tobin. He's a force.

Keith Jarrett concert last night.

He directed our applause towards the Steinway after the second encore. So when he leaned over its innards before launching into the third encore (there were five), I expected him mess around with 'em.  Bit of a tease.

Suffice it to say, he was in fine form, his prodigious talent in service to a confident yet vulnerable psyche.

The Tallest Man on Earth was radtastisch!!! What an extraordinary singer he is. Haven't heard the new album yet but judging from the songs he played last night it will be great. I could sense a progress in his songwriting. Beautiful beautiful songs and during the quiet parts the audience was so into it you could hear a needle drop. The show was at a renovated venue close to where I live and the new venue is perfect for like 400-500 people (like last night). Just what we needed here. Looking forward to see more bands there in the future.

That all sounds great Swede!  It's so nice when no one is talking in the quiet bits.  I suffered some mild irritation at the Papa M gig last week.  I'm seeing Lee Ranaldo this week- I wish The Men were supporting as they were in London, but so far no mention of support.

Re: I am bored so am starting a dull thread about upcoming gigs

I got free passes to Dot to Dot fest this weekendm, and thought that would be a good way of catching up with some new bands.  Saw about six, didn't do much for me.  We were meant to be DJ'ing after all the bands finished but it didn't happen and me and my mate just ended up chatting about our kids until about three in the morning (as that was the time our set was meant to finish, and both had green cards from home to be out until then).  Was actually pretty cool.

I saw;

Admiral Fallow - Good scottish folk act
Bravo Brave Bats - local band I quite like
Islet - Trying too hard weird indie band
Pond - Not THAT Pond it turned out but some semi-ironic Wolfmother types, although I reckon they wouldn't agree with that description.
Can't remember what else, but nothing stayed in the memory.

(am mainly in a grumop as we should have been playing!)

It looks like it's all going belly-up at the National's atp, but I hope not.  The link to tickets is down and Butlins are saying their Minehead location has not been booked by atp and they're having a 90's weekend then.  Hopefully they're just relocating to Camber Sands or something

I reckon they are going bust on Weds morning.  Admittedly I have been calling the end of them for about three years.  If it aint at Minehead though, I'm not going.

I saw Lee Ranaldo last night- it was a fantastic show.  The band were great, and Lee was really engaging.  If he's coming by you I really recommend you go.

Caught Alejandro Escovedo in a small club down the road...he drenched this version of 'I wanna be your dog' in 'Chelsea Hotel 78' that just swamped my body...nice little surprise as I found out 1 hour nefore he played that he was playing...so..shower/jump car/get ticket/have bevs/tap toe...

Re: I am bored so am starting a dull thread about upcoming gigs

Both Orbital and Ben Folds Five are playing here in December.  £35 each.

That's bloody ridiculous.

Who would you pay £35 to see?

Neither it turns out.  Saying that I do really want to go to the Orbital one and Mrs JMMR wants to go to the Ben Folds one.  This has led to us cancelling each other out and probably going to neither.  That would be two nights out, £140 on tickets plus a few drinks, so lets call it £160 all in.

Not.  Happening.

More generally... apart from festivals who would you pay that much to see? I think I've only paid mega bucks to see the Stones who were about £60 a ticket a few years ago...

We're going to see Bruce Springsteen- £60 a ticket, but then Mr Miranda's grandma is paying.  The tickets were his Christmas present.  I've never been to one of these big stadium gigs..  I don't think I'd pay that much to see anyone but Malkmus.  Maybe Bardo Pond, or Bill Callahan..

What's the most people have spent to see a show?  I hate to admit it, but I spent $100/ticket to see Sarah Mclachlan back in the day (front row at a fancy venue via a scalper).  It's even worse in that I was particularly poor at the time--like ramen-eating, Milwuakee's Best-drinking, heat-not-having poor.  $100 was my food budget for like a month.

Re: I am bored so am starting a dull thread about upcoming gigs

I've got Richard Hawley coming up on Friday and then - very excited - MICHAEL NESMITH!!!! on 26th October...:)

Sleepy Sun was good. Not an easy job supporting a band like Japandroids and not getting a proper sound at a very low volume. Made me think less of Japandroids (crew). Kudos to dem for doing their thing anyway.

Japandroids was energetic. Massive wall of sound on that guitar (Fenders and Marshalls stacked together) Did a cover of Mclusky's "To Hell With Good Intentions"! Played for a bit too long. Good show.

Tame Impala last night was fantastic! Better than expected even. Really impressed by the band. They seem to enjoy it themselves too and the place was packed. Singing was really good too (no easy songs to sing) and I was struck several times by how complex the arrangements and songs are. That guy is a fantastic songwriter...some really blissful moments where it was just beautiful beautiful music taking you somewhere else and some moments when they just rocked. Loved it.

I keep hearing about TI but never quite get round to listening to them.  This has been a useful reminder.

Going to see the Wedding Present doing Seamonsters next week.  Should be pretty good.  I haven't been to a proper gig (as in one in which I am not playing, or promoting) for bloomin ages.

Just listening to the song Elephant.  I either hate it or think it is the best thing ever.

Usually when I feel like that about something I end up loving it.  Cheers!

Yay! Good to hear...that song has a beautiful Syd Barrett vibe (the vocals) me thinks. Not the most representative song perhaps but still...:) interested to hear what you think of their other stuff.
