"You know you should be blushin'/to a hue of Robitussin"

Destined to be the "suckin' on a cert/that ain't no dessert" of this album(?).

I think we gotta prepare ourselves for the possibility of Jicks singles + solo electronic Malk album this year.

Feel like it's either that or he's just having trouble coming up with the album name again.

Remember all the rest of the evidence in this thread! We know CFunk posted snippets of what was clearly Malkmus guitar shreds, we know Jake was taking video of much more studio time, and we have the "rumor" that April was a likely release month. And in the Matablog post they pretty much say "wink wink nudge nudge" the album will be announced shortly.

Re: The Official New Album Thread

The song definitely has a Fall Away vibe, maybe with shades of Vague Space on the noodling. But I think it's going to be surrounded by some corkers. Baby Boomer Nites and Midnight Cruisers were good rippers, and I hope the former appears on the new record. And that riffage CFunk posted months back on Instagram was what has become really classic SM shredding.

Re: The Official New Album Thread

Cool song and I'm quite stoked for the tour and full album, but this single release is kind of a bummer to me because it highlights the lackadaisical vibe that Matador seems to take w/ the Jicks as far as promo/marketing stuff goes IMO.

I don't use Spotify or Apple Music, so when I clicked through to buy the track on Google Play and Amazon I got "not authorized in your region" error messages. I know most people do Spotify and Apple Music, but plenty of music nerds (in my experience) eschew that crap and go to Bandcamp when they want to get digital music without those patronizing those vampiric streaming services, so why not make the new track available there?

More generally, just comparing the energy/creativity/fun that, say, Drag City brings to new releases from artists like Ty Segall or Will Oldham (e.g., silly t-shirts and trucker hats and other dumb but also kind of cool merch tie-ins) with the vibe that Matador brings to the Jicks is kind of depressing. Malk is one of the great artists of this era -- give his fans a chance to connect and pour a little more $$$ into that shit.

has anyone really sucked on a cert since 1998? i used to always have a roll in my 1995 nissan altima but i can't recall seeing them lately

Re: The Official New Album Thread

there's definitely a new album. kinda surprised anyone thinks there is even a chance that there isn't.

Re: The Official New Album Thread

100% there is a new album, just look through the evidence in this thread.

Seemed to me that Certs got overrun in the late '90s by LifeSavers' mint offerings.

fish, I somewhat agree with you, but... how much of it is Matador and how much of it is Steve? Steve's been pretty active on Twitter since he joined, and he has hardly said anything about this new album or the electronic stuff (a few mentions in replies). Historically, we've seen pretty much every Jick other than Steve work the angles for new records... and Steve is pretty quiet apart from the arranged interview circuit.

I say that with full respect for everyone involved. It just seems, from a distance, that perhaps SM's vibe sets the tone.

But to your point, one of the points of a label is to have that infrastructure and to get fans pumped up, and yeah, Matador's support for the Jicks has seemed decidedly casual the last two records, especially compared to the juice they've put into almost every other release from their active roster in the same time period. The last juicy thing they did on the Jicks front was arguably the promotion around Senator, with the video having Jack Black and Gary Cole, and the "what does the senator want" contest.

Agreed- 100%.     Feel the same way about marketing for the upcoming Yo La Tengo release, which, btw, sounds superb.   Perhaps all their $ went into promoting QOTSA...     would be killer if SMs electronic album was distributed by Drag City.

Took a screenshot of fishfishfish's comment, which is extremely true, and emailed it to the director of marketing at Matador, and asked her to share it with the Matador staff.

I think it's a possibility that SM says "nah" to a lot of that stuff.  Look at his participation level with the pave reissues as a clue maybe.  Assuming the artist is asked his opinion about these things.  "Hey steve what do you think about this promotional idea? "    "nah"

I like the write up. I can't stomach P4k in general these days though.  The other day the front page literally had a headline indicating  that kylie jenner has named her baby.   Seriously wtf...I used to Enjoy going there for cool new indie rock.   I guess the kids are into different things these days.

yea I think some of you are off on Matador not promoting the Jicks. Honestly feels like how Malkmus wants it. I wonder how much they are even involved with the recording... like I'm thinking Malkmus and the Jicks just get the record finished and then let Matador know.

When it comes down to it, they also probably sell way less records then most of the other acts on Matador.

Yeah, could be. At the end of the day I'm totally ignorant about this stuff and just happy it's viable for everyone involved to keep putting out new SM music. But given the quality of that music and SM's status as the godfather of modern indie rock or whatever, it feels like there SHOULD be a bit more commercial potential.

Re: The Official New Album Thread

I’m holding out on there’s no new albums and Insted they are going to hit us up with (drum roll) . . . . . . Farewell Horizontal reissue! (It’s coming)

Re: The Official New Album Thread

Me thinks Malk/Jicks are following the Beck / Breeders plan.  A single release followed by and album/tour offers more bites of the apple and lays the groundwork for a lot of free publicity.  See: Beck - This new Colors album was singled/ad played to death prior to the actual album coming out, and I think timing and inertia got "Up All Night" to #1 Billboard Alternative and Rock Airplay.  Not that Malk/Jicks are even shooting for Beck's trajectory, but I feel Matador is definitely slotting things to get open wallets at certain pressure points.  Artists this advanced (Malk/Beck/Breeders) in their career are hustling to book bank and grab certain industry accolades, and why not - they all are terribly talented and worked really hard for what they achieved and put out.  Beck is sure happy he jumped to Capitol - they are certainly steering him much better than Geffen did at the end.

Also, Pavy reunion kinda has to be rolling for 2019-2020, so hurry up and book Coachella why don't you.

*Cocaine and Rhinestones - great county history podcast for those of you with lots of driving/commuting time.
**If Taylor Swift singled "American Girl" a couple of weeks after Petty died, that woulda hit #1, not that I even like or know her music, but listening to all the really good music industry machine works detailed in Cocaine and Rhinestones makes me believe that.

***"Middle America" - love it!  Certainly advances the directions that Mirror Traffic went for in such a great way...

Re: The Official New Album Thread

Mid America has some of the best recent malk vocal takes, his voice sounds restrained in all the right ways but still very him. In fact the whole track has a certain restraint and intimacy that hints toward a very rewarding upcoming album.

I downloaded Spotify to listen to this song, but still can't seem to play it. Instead, it plays a playlist based on this song? I'm not sure how it all works. I'm only 35, it shouldn't be this hard.

If you have the free version of Spotify, you can just select any song and play it.

Try to sign up for the free trial.

Yes, it turns out you need to be on a computer or larger tablet. On a phone, you can't play individual tracks.
