Re: is there already a thread about ‘middle america’?

I’m on vaca and meaning to give it a go. Will report back

But fwiw, unless u r tight with alt tunings, i usually do Malk by ear and not by sight, as i am a pretty standard git bro

Re: is there already a thread about ‘middle america’?

I'm comfortable playing his alts, but the brain muscle that used to be able to recognize them by ear or eye is totally atrophied, unfortunately.

Anyone attempted to tab out this tune from the acoustic video? 2 years ago it looks like it'd have been an easy one for me to figure out, now I'm starting over.

I've been playing an acoustic while watching west coast NBA games late at night. Highly recommend. But it's been months since I've plugged anything in. I played my last show on bass back in September '17, loaded all my shit into my basement and there it sits.

The acoustic 12-string video of Middle America should give some pretty good hints, but the dominant chord shape didn't look familiar to me at first glance. Once the tour starts we'll know what he's tuned to based on set list context, but maybe realmac can figure it out by ear.

My ear is not what it was either, Nathan.

Re: is there already a thread about ‘middle america’?

I played around with this just a bit right now. I’m kinda stumped. The root of the beginning chord sounds like an A to me. He’s thumbing the 3rd fret which would mean the low string is tuned to D. But none of the usual D tunings seem to work with that chord shape, unless my eyes are not seeing the shape properly.

According to what I read about the brain, according to recent studies of the brain, we pretty much never forget anything, but we can lose the ability to access neuron pathways that we developed at some stage and might have used quite effortlessly for some time before we prioritiesed other pathways.

Once a pathway has been established, the same neurons will fire again in the sequence of that skill's pathway if there is a convincing reason for the brain to make that happen and the necessary neurotransmitters can be processed.

Chris, indeed -- I need to light a fire under those pathways... soon enough. I bet this new record will help. smile

Re: is there already a thread about ‘middle america’?

My best guess for the tuning is (EBCGBE) on the album and 1/2 step down (EbBbBGbBbEb) on the acoustic version.

         G                  C    Bm  Am
Eb-----------------------------------
Bb-----0--------------0---0---0-----
Gb-----4--------------9---7---5-----
B------2---------------x----x---x-----
Bb-3--3---------------8---7---5-----
Eb-3------------------8---7---5-----
blame stops..      do your major duty...

Bb-3--3---------------8---7---5-----
Eb-3------------------8---7---5-----

Wanna know something curious?

The above also appears to be a transcription of the vector field formula they use in theoretical physics to calculate quantum entanglement.

Re: is there already a thread about ‘middle america’?

After listening on a decent pair of headphones, I realized Malkmus is hitting a low C (down 2 whole steps) on the 6th string when playing that chord. So that means he's tuning the 5th string (A) down 2 1/2 steps to an E and the 4th string down a whole step to a C.

CECGBE on the album and B Eb B Gb Bb Eb (edited) on the video. And he's playing it on a 12-string to further complicate matters

G chord (the 6th string is muted for most of the song)
E---
B-0--
G-4--
C-2--
E-3--
C-X--

C    Bm  Am
------------------
-0----0---0-----
-9----7---5-----
-7----6---4----
-8----7---5-----
-0----x---x-----

The same chord shapes are used for the entire song except the C shape for "time wont wait for you to grow" is:

----
-0--
-0--
-0--
-3--
-0--

Re: is there already a thread about ‘middle america’?

Thanks MM, can't wait to try this out!

Re: is there already a thread about ‘middle america’?

Tried this out last night, thanks for posting! It definitely sounds right to me for the vast majority of the song. The chorus sounds like it is maybe just the C and Am, what do you think?

(At least, acoustic sounds right this way.)

- Nathan

Re: is there already a thread about ‘middle america’?

Here's the chorus. The first C played is (08790x) and is played (03000x) the 2nd time.

C                Bm   Am           C  (0300xx)
Time won't wait for you to grow

C (03000x)                G
Crush back to where I belong
Am
Hold me down like an anchor strong
C                    G
Fill me up 'til I overflow
           Am
In the winter time

In the winter time
                 C
When we get down to it
                        G
You wanted to

Re: is there already a thread about ‘middle america’?

I haven’t tried it out yet, but looking at it from here it looks like a clean transcription

Btw, I thought the line was : time WILL wait for you - like wistfully optimistic with the feel of the song - time won’t wait for you sounds like PiG Lib lyric ha ha

Re: is there already a thread about ‘middle america’?

I actually just grabbed the lyrics from Genius, but I can confirm it is won't. I kinda like that better (as a pessimist)

Any clue if "It fits in your grip, such a feminine trip" is correct or whatever the hell that even means?

Re: is there already a thread about ‘middle america’?

I think the lyrics on Genius are mostly correct. Here's what I got.

------

Blame stops until you do
Blame stops until you do
Do your major duty
And crawl right back again

Times gets to me and I
Wonder how to simplify
You know you should be winning
Time won't wait for you
To grow

Crush me back to where I belong
Hold me down anchor strong
Fill me up til I overflow
In the wintertime
In the wintertime
When we get down to it
You wanted (want it?) to

Arms never get on top
You heed that notion and you'll drop
I'll not be one of the watchers
I'll not disappear

Time gets to me and I
The heir apparent just might try
Wonder how to simplify
You know you should be blushin
To a hue of Robitussin
???

Men are scum, I won't deny
May you be shit-faced the day you die
And be successful in all your lies
In the wintertime
In the wintertime
When we get down to it
You wanted (want it?) to

Do you think you got the nerve?
It doesn't take much nerve
Just kiss yourself metaphorically
Open the door and piss if you need to

Gonna get it when it's hot
Come and get it, ready or not
It fits in your grip, such a feminine trip
Revel in the rubber pavilion
???

Captured in a mason jar
Will you be my whisper unnamed star?
In a galaxy so far far far
From the wintertime
From the wintertime
From the wintertime
Wandering through

Re: is there already a thread about ‘middle america’?

Thanks marquee moon for tuning/tab info. It's definitely a good one.

Re: is there already a thread about ‘middle america’?

I dunno - acoustic version really does sound like time will wait for U

Time begins to meander : p

Re: is there already a thread about ‘middle america’?

In the studio version, he is tuned to CGDGBE.

But, the 12 string video, it is a bit different.

I've just been keeping it either in CG, or STD, and playing the folkie chords.

But, man.... This "Sparkle Motion" or whatevertheheck, has got me on edge, ready for May to get here now!

....Or, another single, beforehand.

now, they're gonna burn me....

Re: is there already a thread about ‘middle america’?

I hear you with the CGDGBE tuning on the album. The G might be X024xx on the album with the electric.

The acoustic def seems to be in that modified open C (or Cmaj7) tuning on the video and record though.

Makes sense since Wig Out was mostly open D

Re: is there already a thread about ‘middle america’?

there's something about the "hue of Robitussin" lyric that gives me chills every time i hear it... it's quintessential Malkmus at its best.

Really?
Or, are you just being funny....?

I think you're serious. If you are, I apologize.

But, I know during the "Mirror Traffic" Tour, he had these special, maybe, Adidas Soccer Championship Shoes.

I might even have a video of him saying this.

But, these ones, not a clue, my friend. Not a clue.

Sorry.

I wish ya luck. They seem difficult to determine, as they're just plain boring white ass shoes. Hahaha!
I could be wrong.
Maybe it's a European Company that I don't recognize.

Best of luck on your quest!
