hahah.  shit like this is why pfork could never be considered legitimate journalism.  that's almost as bad as the times they've realized they initial assessment of something ends up diverging from the critical consensus so find flimsy excuses to re-review it, deleting the old review in the process.  which they've done many times at this point

Re: Sparkle Hard reviews

RE: Groove Denied - I've been excited since I heard that kid's annoyed Twitter posts about that show, which someone in said article gushes about. I cannot help but think about how that would've been Malk's 7th solo release if he were left to his own devices & wonder if, in turn, Sparkle Hard would've been even more highly lauded as a return to form or some such thing... (I feel like the speculated Drag City release format would've been the way to go. It feels like it's been too long since we've had a sharp turn in the opposite direction for him... He could get on the cover of Wire magazine.)

Sparkle Hard, at first blush to one of the faithful, sounds... expectedly excellent. Not too vastly different from Jagbags other than in the lovely production flourishes, which I was braced for & actually sound like the realization of expectations I had when I heard Beck was producing him 2 LPs ago.

I hope we get more extraneous tracks this time out. Maybe an EP (remember those?) Or the alt. version of Shiggy. When I read Steve & Joanna wanted to drop Middle America from the album I couldnt help but wonder why they didnt just throw it out there as a non-album single.

Very happy to have new music, but always crave a little more. Maybe around the 25th anniversary of the Jix, when looking to send his daughters to college, we'll finally get some kind of vault scrapping reissues. Hell, Scott already did it for the 1st 2 PSOI albums, & the 1st Spiral one, and literally no one cares or was asking or even reviewed them on their blog...

Jesus.  How petty.

Re: Sparkle Hard reviews

actually i just googled that particular incident and can fully understand why they did that.  not only is Ott an asshole (and misogynist) but he was threatening to sue them to try to get his reviews off the site anyway.  so fuck him

deleting old reviews that they now find embarrassing, though, is still laughably bad

"‘Difficulties / Let Them Eat Vowels’ is like Pavement classics ‘Fillmore Jive’ and ‘Infinite Spark’ in its length, deliciously melancholic chord cycles and movement towards wigged-outness, or his own peculiar brand of it."

WTF is Infinite Spark? Apparently it's Fin. Where does this alternate (original?) title come from?
