So, who's got the answers!?

now, they're gonna burn me....

Re: jangley guitars, angular chops: guitar gear thread

the two red and white pedals are a couple Earthquaker Devices, the og Grand Orbiter and Hoof Reaper. the former a phaser and the later two favors of fuzz with an octave

the little blue and white appears to be another EQD pedal, i think. and if I'm right, it's the Tone Job, which is an EQ pedal, a recent addition I would believe

Re: jangley guitars, angular chops: guitar gear thread

It could also be a Dispatch Master, which if I recall was shown in a photo when he was recording the Flaked soundtrack.

oh word, you are def right. nice, and makes much more sense in a Malk rig

can you poss point me to that picture? I'm a total gear nut

Re: jangley guitars, angular chops: guitar gear thread

also of note in the KEXP pics; Mike and Joanna's pedals, Stephen's guitars

looks like Mike has some Boss, maybe a tuner and a DS and a DD-20!? a Crybaby and 2 i can't make out, maybe some more EQD

Thanks WeezerWes!

Re: jangley guitars, angular chops: guitar gear thread

EHX Synth9, word, as heard in that new Sin Taxi clip. And an El Cap!? Wow, Steve goes Strymon, I’m straight up surprised. Anyone identify the rocker pedal?

It's on page 5 of this thread, clearly can see the Dispatch Master on display in it.

Interesting how much dirt he's using this tour. Can't wait to see him live to see how he utilizes all of it.

I gotta know what that green and white one is! Looks like an EQD, but which one?

This is almost as good as my last signature.

are you talking about the one last in the chain seen here at the 7 second mark?
https://youtu.be/fZgkgXmjs3s?t=7s

it does have that EQD look, but i'm not aware of one with three black knobs and that greenish/blueish and white color scheme...

Re: jangley guitars, angular chops: guitar gear thread

i think i've tracked down the rocker pedal in this pic, thanks to some fellow gear-nuts in another little corner of the net

it's the Mu-Tron C-200 vol/wah pedal, a bit of unobtanium, $400 n up on the used market...

Yeah I know, I couldn't find evidence of it on their website past or present, but it does like more like an Earthquaker than anything else I've seen. Fuck!

Re: jangley guitars, angular chops: guitar gear thread

there's a 24hr video on instagram.  showing all the gear.  just for us! :-)

I know although not enough of a close up on Steve’s rig! Good to know Jo uses a Portaflex like me though.

Last time I saw them she was playing thru a Mesa 400+ — not trying to be a snob and I get the portability factor, but she didn’t sound nearly as warm to me. No substitute for TWELVE 6L6’s. I also find it funny she still brings an 8x10 (or 6x10?) cabinet. Most of the stages this tour would be totally fine with a 4x10 or a 2x15.  If you’re gonna go small, go for it i say.

Re: jangley guitars, angular chops: guitar gear thread

Rando thought:

Does anybody remember that red Gibson SG that Malkmus had during the CRCR/WZ era? Has that ever made an appearance since then? What happened to it? Was it even his? Or a rental for touring?

Re: jangley guitars, angular chops: guitar gear thread

I’m looking to upgrade to a real good amp after 8 years of gutting it out on a 4-watt practice amp. I’m a big fan of sm’s sound: ideally I’d like the amp to have a ton of warm, clean headroom and then go straight into a warm tube overdrive/distortion when using the right pedals. I want it to be loud enough to play shows, but ideally not enormous in physical size.

I don’t have any experience playing nice amps, so trying them out at the local music shop feels overwhelming. I’ve tried out the Vox tube amps (ac15 &ac30,) and the fender blues junior and pro junior. They all sound way better than what I’ve been playing, but I don’t want to end up with a middle-of-the-road amp that’s a temporary upgrade but will have to replace in the long run. Looking for a little direction. I’m open to any suggestions!

Do a little hopscotch

Re: jangley guitars, angular chops: guitar gear thread

If you can get a cheap, older model (don't laugh!) Peavey Classic 50 on Craigslist, those are usually a good value for money.

All tube (3x12ax7 preamp, 4xel84 for power)
They came in 2x12 and 4x10 configs, or a standalone head version if you've already got a cab...also a "Classic 30" with 1x12
They're fixed-bias (or self-biasing?), so you can (in theory) swap tubes around quickly if you want to tweak for tonez
The amp's drive channel is fairly crappy but the clean is very nice, great pedal platform
If you get an older 80s/90s model, and someone hasn't beat you to it, you can pop the angular, metal cheeze "Peavey" logo off the front and it looks just like a Fender Deluxe (might have been a lawsuit threat that made them change the design?)
The USA-built ones are historically very well built, problem free, and can run for years and years without issue

If you end up wanting to change out tubes & speakers and things, they're good for that.  Sort of the same principle of buying a cheap Fender and gradually upgrading parts until you're happy

However if the price goes too much north of $300 or so, maybe you're better off just bumping up to the Fender Twin tier.  Just for a baseline, looking just now I see somebody locally (LA) selling a 70s Silverface for $400, so those are still circulating at a reasonable price.
