Topic: Premier Guitar "Unknowing Guitarist" Malk interview

Not sure if this has been posted yet or should go in another place. My phones google app suggested this interview in its AI curated news cycle and I'm really glad it did. Lots of interesting insight into the Malkman's song writing, guitar playing and production style.

Re: Premier Guitar "Unknowing Guitarist" Malk interview

Thanks for the share! Some good tidbits in there. I've always been under the impression that there were 2 black strats in the lineage. One with a white pickguard from the early days, and of course the tortoise shell beast from later years til present. But here he says he's had the one guitar since he was 16, so maybe it's just 1 guitar.

Really interesting notes about the recording methods w/ Funk too. Sounds like a great way to work.

I love any interview or press generally, but we've been getting some really great ones recently.

Reading this interview is what led me to post this in the tabs thread, so I'll re-post here because it is a little interesting/odd to note given Malk's longstanding pickless approach:

I cannot remember if I mentioned this, but it just popped back into my head.

Steve, as usual, did not use a pick in Detroit (early June). In Cincy, he was using a pick for part of the show, which was noticeable because he dropped it.

At the second Brooklyn show he used a pick for at least part of one song, can't remember which one. I saw him take it out of his pocket and later return it.

IIRC in Detroit he used a pick for Stick Figures In Love to get that tremolo on the guitar part. However my youtube research has shown him playing the song with and sans pick.

Re: Premier Guitar "Unknowing Guitarist" Malk interview

I've always said (as I'm sure many others have), Malkmus is an underrated guitar player. It's great when we actually get an interview about how he approaches his playing.

What was really interesting thing is the origin of his Strat. Apparently it's been the same one since he was 16? I thought he's had a couple, over the years; there was one with a white pickguard, but I guess that's the same guitar, and he put a different pickguard on it? And it use to have humbuckers too. What exactly is the story of how he bought it "not on the up and up?"
